FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The American Math Olympiad (AMO) is an international math competition jointly organised by SIMCC and Southern Illinois University (SIU)  for students from Grade 2 to Grade 12. It is designed to assess and enhance problem-solving, logical reasoning, and analytical thinking.

Participating in AMO helps students:

  • Strengthen critical thinking and non-routine problem-solving skills
  • Gain international exposure and compete with global peers
  • Build confidence and resilience in competitive environments
  • Improve performance in math and boost academic results
  • Earn  university scholarships, Global Scholars Program, International Junior Honor Society (IJHS) membership, tuition grants and internships.

Unlike IMO (International Math Olympiad by SOF) or IOM (International Olympiad of Mathematics), which are curriculum-aligned and often focused on national-level competition, AMO features international-level, non-routine problems designed to test deeper conceptual understanding. AMO places a greater emphasis on analytical reasoning, creativity, and open-ended problem solving.

Students from Grade 2 to Grade 12 are eligible to participate. They can register through their schools or as independent candidates.

The AMO exam is a 90-minute online test conducted in English. It includes three sections:

  • Section A: Multiple-choice questions on core concepts
  • Section B: Higher-order problem-solving
  • Section C: Advanced non-routine problems
Each level is customized to suit the student’s grade, ensuring appropriate difficulty.

The AMO syllabus aligns with international math standards, covering topics in arithmetic, geometry, algebra, number theory, and problem-solving strategies. It emphasizes logical reasoning and conceptual understanding over rote memorization. For details syllabus, please scroll up to the syllabus section.

Students who win Bronze Medal or higher in AMO are eligible to participate in the Singapore Math Global Finals (SMGF)—an elite international competition that brings together top math talent from around the world.

To prepare for AMO:

  • Practice non-routine and Olympiad-style math problems regularly
  • Use past AMO papers, sample tests, and international math workbooks
  • Focus on logical reasoning, multi-step problem solving, and time management
